About the Artist
Thomasina Schnepf
My name is Thomasina Schnepf. I am legally blind, and because of this, I create and "view" the world, and my work, very closely.
My disability is the result of a tumor on my optic nerve at age 4. Usually, one's "vision" is one's world. But for me, my loss of sight, while distorting my vision of your world, has actually caused me to examine everything much more closely in order to "see" what is truly there. It is from this "vision" that I create my pieces, and it is my experiences that my pieces intend to convey.
Forms to me are a way to "see" the world as you do. I use form to help me layout my designs. The designs guide my hands and eyes to create individual one of a kind pieces. I need excellent lighting conditions in order to see at all. Since my view of the world is simple, forms to me are not so much separate, distinct and concrete items. Together with light and glass, they catch fields of light which interact with each other and create an up close, believable world of which I am a part.
Each unique one of a kind piece is created with various combinations of fused colored glass, glass gems, glass beads, glass stringers, and/or glass noodles.
